“PEACE PEACE WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE…”

“Peace Peace When There is No Peace…” The prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel both spoke these words to the people of Israel when they saw what was coming. The people had been seduced into complacency in their disobedience to the Lord’s will, believing everything was okay and life would be good because false prophets had told them so. But Jeremiah and Ezekiel saw differently, hearing directly from God, knowing His anger and wrath were to be poured out on a rebellious nation who’d long been rejecting His ways. “An astonishing and horrible thing has been committed in the land; the prophets prophesy falsely and the priests rule by their own power; and my people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?” (Jer 5:31) Jeremiah went on to say, ”they have healed the brokenness of My people lightly, saying peace peace when there is no peace.”[i] He repeats these same words in chapter eight verse eleven. His words are echoed by Ezekiel who also stated, “it is definitely because they have misled My people by saying, ‘Peace!’ when there is no peace.” [ii] Are we sailing into a storm? A wise sailor keeps a close eye on the weather forecast to see what’s coming. Today’s technical advances enable seafarers to get a very good idea of the weather, days or even weeks in advance, and prepare accordingly.
