“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” – Matthew 7:6
Dear Friends, have you ever shared something of value in a home group, or with a church leader, or with Christian friends, only to have them turn on you and attack you, or even betray you? Have you been ostracised in your church because you have an understanding of something important to do with the Kingdom of Heaven, that others do not? The words of Jesus in Matthew 7:6 are a warning to us not to share such holy nuggets of wisdom with those who do not understand.
For if they truly wanted to understand the Kingdom of Heaven, and hear what you do, they would also, as is written, seek first the Kingdom of Heaven by asking, seeking and knocking.
Things that are holy are, as alluded to in previous letters, things that are set apart for a special mission, role, purpose or time. They are things that pertain to God’s divine will, Kingdom and purposes. Pearls are highly valuable and beautiful, and Jesus uses them as a picture to speak of pearls of wisdom. So when the Lord reveals to you certain things that are of great significance and value for the Kingdom, these are holy understandings akin to pearls of wisdom.
Now the warning is this: that we should not give to the dogs or swine what is holy – Jesus is using dogs and swine to describe ‘unclean people’, people who are unholy in their ways, actions and thoughts.
Sadly, the church has more than its fair share of unbelievers (therefore unholy) for whom being a Christian is a religious practice, job or source of a pension even, rather than a joyful empowering life changing relationship with our Father in Heaven. So just because someone goes to church doesn’t mean they are born again or in tune with God’s ways through His Holy Spirit. People can sit in church for years, decades even, even in leadership positions, but this still doesn’t mean they are ‘clean.’ God knows this for He sees the innermost thoughts of the human heart. Nothing is hidden from Him, which is why He says many are called but ultimately only a few will be chosen. However, for you dear friends, with the ‘mind of Christ’ given you through the inspiration of the Spirit, you can discern who is and is not holy (clean). And by this you can know who to share your pearls with!
Jesus is telling you not to share your holy understandings with people who are unclean in their thoughts and ways, for they may ultimately trample and betray you. So ask the Holy Spirit whether to share, for sometimes God wishes to simply reveal the secrets of His heart to those who are closest to Him, a private affair – what a privilege!
Hence, there is “a time to be silent and a time to speak.” and a reason to “be quick to listen and slow to speak.”
For further understanding of human ‘dogs,’ Revelation 22:14-15 says…
“Blessed are those who do the commandments (of God), that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city (of God/aka the new heaven and new earth), but outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie!”
The ‘dogs’ are the unclean people, the unholy, whether in or outside the ‘church’. The dogs are those who do not ‘do the commands of God’. So these people will, by default, if you share true kingdom wisdom and principles hate you and despise you.
The swine are also a depiction of a people type. Swine (pigs) are also unclean and this is why the Jews do not eat pork and neither do Muslims, and for that matter neither should any disciple of Jesus, for the servant is not greater than his Master and we are not exempt from the laws He was, for He instituted them! Swine eat anything going, they are dirty and messy, and given half a chance might eat you too!
Contextually, Jesus is saying do not give the pearls of wisdom given to you by your Father in Heaven, to people who will eat any spiritual food going, whose lives are in a mess, who like to wallow in their filth and deception, and have no intention of changing their ways. They are stuck in their thinking, you’re wasting your God given crown jewels and, risking personal harm in the process!
You must also understand that it is what is inside these people that is reacting. The battle is not against flesh and blood. There is always a spiritual dimension at work. When deception is confronted with truth, there is always a reaction. Satan hates truth, he hates God and he hates God’s true children. He hates those who genuinely seek first the Kingdom of Heaven and God’s righteousness. So when you share Kingdom truths, your ‘pearls of wisdom’, the enemy reacts. Such words will then be turned against you and they will seek your downfall, just as they did with Jesus, for the accuser of the brethren will always use other people to point the finger.
• If the world hates you, keep in mind it hated me first.” John 15:18 • You will be hated by everyone for My name’s sake Matthew 10:22
Dear friends, the truth will get you into trouble in this world, so be wise with whom you share it. For even those whom you assume may be brothers may not, for brother will betray brother in the last days, and these days we are certainly in. So be wise as serpents and gentle as doves. Always ask the Holy Spirit first whether to share, and listen carefully to the still small voice that comes back with the answer….
